Scholes made up for the disappointment of missing out nine years later, as he started in the 2008 Champions League final against Chelsea, which United won on penalties.
But despite Sir Alex Ferguson’s side missing their two linchpins in central midfield, Scholes emphasised the adaptability of that ’99 side to deal with their absence.
However, she insisted localised outbreaks would be acted upon to prevent further spread.
It was first Covid-19 briefing from Number 10 since daily press conferences came to a halt over a week ago.
Asked about the effect of students’ return to the classrooms in September, she and Education Secretary Gavin Williamson denied that Leicester’s spike in coronavirus infections had been caused to some pupils already returning to school last month.
Mr Williamson, who said mandatory attendance will be implemented at the beginning of the new academic cycle, added that shutting down Leicester “was not something about schools returning”.
For most, it was the first time going back to the classrooms as schools shut in March to all students except children of key workers and those in vulnerable households.
Dr Harries was questioned about the possibility of implementing a shutting down schools again, should there be a second peak of Covid-19 cases.
The Education Secretary held a briefing at Number 10 today to explain the rules to parents and students. All pupils in England will be expected to return to school in September as part of government plans unveiled on Thursday, which include dividing students into separate groups to limit the spread of COVID-19. At present, only some students in certain year groups and the children of key workers are at school, depending on the area and set-up.
• Minimise contact with individuals who are unwell. Pupils, teachers and other adults must not attend schools if they have coronavirus symptoms or have tested positive for coronavirus in the last seven days.
Anyone who develops symptoms while at schools must be sent home immediately. Children waiting to be collected should be in a room where they can isolated behind a closed door.
• Clean hands thoroughly more often than usual. Schools must ensure that pupils clean their hands regularly, including when they arrive at school, when they return from breaks, when they change rooms and before and after eating. Schools will need to consider whether they have enough hand-washing facilities or hand-sanitiser “stations”.
